For high school students Lucero and Francine, volunteering isn’t just about giving back—it’s about growing outside of the classroom and preparing for the future. Lucero, 17, a senior at Citrus Hill High School in Perris, wanted to get involved before heading to college, where she’s hoping to major in environmental science. “I wanted to gain experience,” she said, “Composting was something I had never done before.” The Department of Waste Resources offers opportunities for anyone over the age of 15 to gain hands-on experience in sustainability and community engagement.

For Francine, 15, a student at Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley, volunteering is an opportunity to learn and have fun while doing it. She chose to volunteer with Waste Resources because as an aspiring researcher, she thought volunteering with the Department would be a good way to gain exposure to and experience in environmental science and sustainability. “I’m also really excited to help at the farmer’s markets and the Kids’ Summer Camp,” she added.

The Volunteer Program provides a welcoming space for students who are curious about sustainability or are looking for ways to practice their social skills. Whether assisting in the garden, supporting our composting instructors, or helping at tabling events, volunteers gain skills that can shape their academic and career paths.

“This is a great opportunity for high school students,” said Lucero.

The next Volunteer Orientation and Training will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Waste Resources headquarters office (14310 Frederick St., Moreno Valley, CA 92553).
